Winter is Coming: Stockpile your home formulary

This installment will discuss some over the counter, non prescription supplements you can buy to bolster and strengthen your body's own immune system for prevention of cold and influenza infections, and for early self treatment at home. Nothing shared here from open source online research, including scientific studies provided, should be considered a substitute for medical advice or an attempt to diagnose illness.

"Recommended dosing" is not my personal recommendation, but recommendations based on the findings of published clinical studies and in published statements by licensed, practicing physicians which I have merely relayed here. The supplements listed here have been backed by multiple studies that demonstrate their effectiveness.

Future posts will discuss herbal remedies, including some herbal based recipes for you to make and have available to use at home.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 has to be one of the most important supplements you should consider taking in the winter months, especially if you live farther north.

Many ENT physicians will state, "We don't have a cold or flu season, we have a low Vitamin D season". A study of patients admitted to ICU for COVID demonstrated most had low serum Vitamin D levels, and the lower the level of serum Vitamin D, the more severe the symptoms.

Dosing:  The physicians at FLCCC recommend a sliding scale dosage of between 5,000 - 10,000 IU daily, depending on weight and obesity status. Because Vit D3 is fat soluble, obese people need to take more Vitamin D3 supplementation for the same preventative and curative effect as non-obese people. Vitamin D3 also acts as a hormone.

Vitamin C

I am not going to go much into the discussion of Vitamin C, as it is well known of its importance in fighting infection.

However, I will note that Vitamin C is water soluble, and when your body has reached the capacity point it can manage with orally ingested Vitamin C, you will experience pretty dramatic diarrhea. This is known as taking Vitamin C "to bowel tolerance". It may be uncomfortable, but it's not lethal.

Do not take Vitamin C with B-12. Stagger them at least 4 hours apart.
Do not take Vitamin C with zinc. Stagger them at least 4 hours apart.
Higher doses of Vitamin C can also interfere with a number of medications, including birth control pills.

Another trivia point is that unlike most other animals, humans lost the ability to manufacture our own Vitamin C, therefore we must continue to supplement. The most bioactive form of Vitamin C is liposomal Vitamin C, which is the type of supplement I recommend you source and buy to supplement natural sources.

Insider tip:  It has been known since at least WWI that IV infusion of high dose Vitamin C was extremely effective for a wide variety of viral infections, and even today many medical practitioners will high dose IV infuse themselves - but not tell their patients, or offer it as a therapy to their patients. You didn't hear this from me. It's a misguided, ahem, "rumor"  and I never, ever would have tried it myself when I was fighting an uphill battle with the crud. Nope.

"Deciding you have sovereignty over your own body and have the right to choose alternative therapies that Big Pharma can't make a gorzillion dollars from?
That's quackery!"

NAC (N-Acetylcysteine)

NAC is a "non essential amino acid" and a precursor used by your body to make glutathione, known as a "Master Anti-oxidant" for the body.

NAC is preferable over glutathione supplements, because glutathione supplements, including high quality sub-lingual drops, are only about 30% bioactive - so why waste your money. Feed your body the precursor, and let it do the work.

Has been used to loosen thick mucus and fluid in lungs, reduce inflammation in the respiratory system and calm a cytokine storm with powerful immuno-modulating effects. It also reduced the frequency of influenza as well as the severity and duration of most symptoms of those who did get influenza.

It has been also used safely for decades to treat acetaminophen (Tylenol) overdoses and alcohol poisoning.
(Hint: NAC is really helpful if you've "overindulged" a bit too much)

Recommended dosing: 600 mg twice daily.

Nigella sativa (Black Cumin Seed Oil) + Raw Honey

Nigella Sativa has been demonstrated to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and has been used in Herbalism for centuries for cardiac issues, optimal cardiac health and to modulate mild hypertension.

Most recently Nigella sativa has shown in multiple random clinic studies to be an effective bronchodilator, anti-inflammatory, anti-tussive and anti-viral among other positive effects in the respiratory system for acute respiratory issues, including asthma.

The efficacy of N. sativa is improved if it is taken with a good quality raw honey. The reasons why aren't known yet, but there is a positive synergistic biochemical co-factor at play between N. sativa and the raw honey.

Recommended dosing for adults:  500 mg twice daily.
FLCCC:  up to 6000 mg daily for infection treatment

Zinc + Quercetin + Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ)

The Front Line COVID-19 Critical Care Alliance (FLCCC) has published guidelines for the prevention and early at home treatment of SARS-COV-2 (COVID 19). These guidelines could also most likely be used for other respiratory infections and influenza. Their guidelines recommend timing and use of HCQ, Zinc and Quercetin together.

FLCCC Recommendations:

Quercetin is a known zinc ionophore, meaning it helps zinc cross the plasma barrier to enter the cells so it can do its anti-viral stuff.

This article cites several studies which confirm quercetin and zinc's anti viral activity as well as being a powerful anti inflammatory combination.

Zinc should be taken with Quercetin and should always be taken with food. Zinc taken alone can cause extreme nausea to the point of vomiting if it is taken on an empty stomach.

Zinc lozenges are also good. The best way to use them most effectively is not to chew them, but to lie down, hyper extend your neck and allow the lozenge to dissolve in your mouth and begin to coat the throat.

Recommended dosing:  Zinc 75 - 100 mg
(FLCCC)                        Quercetin 250 mg twice daily
                                       HCQ 200 mg twice daily

Dr. Vladimir Zelenko was a physician who began aggressively and successfully treating patients in his practice who presented with COVID-19. As his experience in treating COVID-19 grew, he developed the "Z-Stack" formulation, a combination of supplements for COVID prevention and early treatment. Many other vendors are also now offering similar combo supplements in keeping with the most recent guidance of the FLCCC.

One example of a combination formula for immune support and prevention is shown here, but there are many more out there.

Until next time, continue to take care of yourselves and continue to stay well.

  1. Fan & user of all your suggested supplements above. I'd only add two, which I've taken daily for over a dozen years and suffered only one flu like illness, last Jan, in all that time. Potassium Iodide 65mgs daily and EpiCor (Diamond V) 500 mgs daily.

  2. "Another trivia point is that unlike most other animals, humans lost the ability to manufacture our own Vitamin C, therefore we must continue to supplement."
    actually ... not true.
humans produce enough vitamin C for their diet if the are on a carnivore diet.
the digestion of plants uses the vitamin C ... therefor if you have a carbohydrate / plant based diet, you will need to supplement.
eskimos, african masai, comanche's from the 1800's etc, who all had / have an all meat diet did / do not develop scurvy ... it is when changing to standard american diet (carbohydrate heavy) that the problem surfaces.
